Lustenau and Jesenice win AHL games on Tuesday

On Tuesday EK Zeller Eisbären had a great fight with HDD SIJ Acroni Jesenice in front of their home crowd but in the end the leaders took a 5:3 win thanks to a strong third period. EHC Alge Elastic Lustenau were successive too, beating Sportivi Ghiaccio Cortina Hafro 4:3 at home.

The game in Zell am See was fast-paced right from the beginning. The hosts showed early that they have nothing to give away but conceded the first goal after eight minutes, though: Urban Sodja scored on their first power play occasion. Just a few minutes later Fredrik Widen scored the equalizer and then Fabian Scholz turned the game around. However, the visitors scored again with a man advantage and the first period ended 2:2 thanks to Marjan Manfreda’s goal. After the restart the Slovenes had the better of the play and Jure Sotlar took advantage of a bad mistake in Zell’s defense for a 2:3 score. The 500 fans still saw an even-balanced match with Widen tying it halfway through the game. In the third period both teams played very defensively-minded with both goalies performing well when needed. With seven minutes to go Zan Jezovsek restored Jesenice‘s lead and the same player scored another goal for the 5:3 preliminary decision just a few minutes later. The leader celebrated their sixth successive win.

Lustenau had the superiority on the ice early in the game and after only four minutes they made the breakthrough: One player of the visitors got the puck over the line but Petr Vala was the official scorer. Halfway through the first Max Wilfan kept track of a confusing situation to double the lead. Just a few seconds later Connor Leen pulled one back for a 2:1 score after 20 minutes. In the second period a fair game became rougher with some penalties breaking the flow of the game. After a defensive mistake from Cortina, Philipp Winzig found the back of the net. Cortina still tried to impress their opponents with a physical game but as a result they had to go to the penalty box often. The hosts were not able to took advantage of these situations, though. The Italians did better in the third and Zachary Torquato halved the deficit after only six minutes on power play. Soon after the hosts had a two men advantage and this time Stefan Wiedmaier added a fourth. With three minutes left, the guests pulled their goalie and it paid off when Edoardo Caletti generated excitement again with Cortina’s third goal. However, Lustenau killed the clock successfully and earned three important points.
